I Have My Father's Face

© 2005

I have my father's face.
The shape and color of his eyes,
His curly hair,
Even the mole by his mouth.
I am of him, but not him.
There is room for poignant memories
And I must someday puzzle it out.
But for now, I have my father's face,
And that is all.

Red, peach, salmon

Red, peach, salmon,
Pink, yellow, cream,
Stripes and plaid.

Pens, papers and textbooks,
Dictionaries, paper clips, erasers,
Questions.

Joy, sorrow, wonder,
New hope, lost hope,
Families left behind,
Families found.

Ships, sails, planes, wings,
Long goodbyes, painful goodbyes,
Hopeful goodbyes,
Bitter sweet.

Humiliation, freedom,
Loneliness, connection,
Pregnant pauses, tales waiting to be heard,
Eloquence and depth hidden beneath broken English,
A Myriad of colors, layers of clothes.

All of us, immigrants.
My students. Myself.
